"It seems hard to imagine that a band inspired as much
by breakfast cereal and Saturday morning cartoons as rock &
roll could have created the album that spawned an entire movement
-- grunge. When Neurotica was released in 1987, it inspired hordes
of punk/hardcore kids to put down the safety pins and pick up
the guitar. The perfect blend of Beatles/Kiss-style pop/rock and
Butthole Surfers art rockLargely ignored upon its release in 1987
(Big Time folded shortly after and the band were unable to record
under their own name for three years), Neurotica did manage to
find its way into some very important young people's bedrooms.
Redd Kross had unwittingly created the rough, lo-fi, melodic,
rock & roll template that bands like Mudhoney and Nirvana
would become very successful exploring over the next few years."

project notes: Jeff McDonald called me and told me that
they were reissuing Neurotica, and that he didn't trust
anyone else to pull off the cover art. This was a huge honor for
me, since this has been one of my all time favorite bands and records
(I bought it on it's original release day in 1987!) There were a
number of challenges invovled, the original photo, negatives and
design elements for the CD had long been lost and we had a mere
7 days to turn in the final approved artwork. We were able to locate
a virgin sealed 12" copy of the orignal pressing, and I had
it professionally scanned for the CD; and we did have alternate
photos and negatives to work with. We ended up with my hand tracing
the original lettering to make it crisp, and using an alternate
shot for the 12" LP (Sympathy For
The Record Industry), while using the 12" scan
with the redone lettering for the CD. Jeff and
I dug through our archives to find as many photos from that era
of the band, and I frantically scanned and collaged a 12 page CD
booklet out of them. I wish we had at least another week ot two
to really dial things in further but all things considered, this
was one of the most memorable, challenging and rewarding projects
I've worked on. Prior to this reissue, the limited number of original
pressings of Neurotica CDs available were known to fetch
prices comparable to The Beatles' "Butcher
Cover" album by fans and collectors. I consider my involvement
in this to be one of the more important contributions I've made
to pop culture. |
